Full-scope civil excavation for commercial projects — on time, on budget, no surprises.
When a commercial project falls behind schedule or goes over budget, it usually starts with the site work. Wrong grades. Missed utility ties. Equipment delays from a third-party hauler who wasn’t available. Heyl Construction is built to stop that from happening.
We handle excavation, grading, underground utilities, road construction, and demolition — all under one contract, all with our own crew and equipment. Developers, general contractors, and municipalities across the Western Slope have trusted us to get their sites ready for 27 years. The terrain here is different. The freeze windows are short. The tolerance for rework is zero. We know that because we’ve been working this corridor since before most of our competitors were in business.
One contractor. One contract. Excavation, grading, utilities, road prep, and demolition — our own crew and our own equipment, start to finish.

Years on the
Western Slope
Heyl Construction has been based in Silt, Colorado since the beginning. For more than two decades we’ve done civil work up and down the western slope, from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and Vail to Parachute, this isn’t a market we moved into, it’s home, and we know it well.
We deliver a quality civil construction product at a price that makes sense, and we do what we say we’re going to do: accurate bids, realistic timelines, and a GPS-guided Trimble fleet that keeps grading and excavation precise. From a 42-acre mixed-use development with a water ski lake and CDOT improvements to a half-mile private road paved under budget and ahead of schedule, we deliver at every scale across this region.
Commercial excavation is more than moving dirt. Here’s the full scope of what we handle on every commercial site.
Large-scale earthmoving to bring a site to the design elevation. We calculate cut and fill volumes upfront so there are no surprises mid-project. GPS machine control keeps our grades accurate to plan — less rework, better finished surfaces.
Foundation excavation, building pad preparation, and rough grading for commercial structures of any size. We work from engineered plans and use Trimble equipment to hit the grades your structural team needs.
Fine grading and sub-grade preparation for slab-on-grade, road base, and utility corridors. Tight tolerances matter here — we use GPS machine control to deliver the compacted, level sub-grade your project requires before the next trade steps on site.
Trenching and excavation for water mains, sewer mains, natural gas, electric, telephone, and cable TV. We coordinate trench depth, bedding, and backfill with the utility scope so everything goes in right the first time.
Rough cut and sub-grade excavation for private roads, subdivision streets, and CDOT-adjacent access routes. We prep the corridor to design cross-section so road-base and paving can follow without delays.
Pre-excavation demolition of existing structures, asphalt, and related infrastructure. We clear and haul with our own equipment — no coordinating a separate demo contractor before we can get started.
Excavation and grading work includes proper drainage planning from the start. We cut swales, establish positive drainage, and comply with Colorado stormwater and erosion control requirements on every commercial project.
Excavation, utilities, and road prep handled by one crew — with one point of accountability for the entire site.
Deep local knowledge of Colorado’s terrain, soil conditions, seasonal freeze windows, and utility requirements. We’ve worked this corridor for decades and know what it takes to deliver here.
Trimble machine-control equipment means accurate cuts and fills on every project. Less rework. Tighter tolerances. Better finished grades.
Excavation, grading, underground utilities, road construction, paving, and demo, all handled under one contract by one crew. No coordination headaches between subs. No finger-pointing when something slips.
Qualified for public road and municipal infrastructure projects. If your project touches a public right-of-way or requires state certification, we have the credentials to handle it.
We don’t low-ball to win work and make it up in change orders. Our estimates are detailed and our timelines are realistic. If something changes on site, you hear about it early, not at invoice time.
Tandem dumps, side dumps, end dumps, lowboy, and GPS-guided grading equipment, all in-house. We control the schedule, not a third-party operator.
We keep it straightforward. No vague timelines, no scope-creep surprises. Here’s how a commercial project moves with Heyl from first contact to completion.
Fill out our proposal form or call us directly. Tell us your project location, scope, and timeline. We’ll ask the right questions to give you an accurate number, not a placeholder.
We visit the site, assess the terrain, soil conditions, utility conflicts, and access constraints. Our bid is itemized and specific. You’ll know exactly what’s included and what’s not.
We confirm your project window and schedule around western Colorado’s seasonal realities, especially critical for grading before freeze and asphalt in the right temperature window. Our equipment mobilizes on time.
Our crew handles the full scope with our own equipment. You’ll have a direct contact on site throughout. If conditions change, you’ll hear from us before it affects the schedule or budget.
We walk the finished site with you before we consider the job done. Grades, utility installations, road surfaces, everything is reviewed against the plan before we demobilize.
The Tree Farm PUD is a 42-acre mixed-use development in the Roaring Fork Valley with a water ski lake and extensive CDOT improvements. When we needed an experienced civil contractor to handle all the infrastructure, including a lift station adjacent to the lake, Heyl won our trust and our business. They’ve been a pleasure to work with, and I’d recommend them for any civil construction needs.

They paved our half-mile stretch of private road, had to deal with ten contrary homeowners, and they did a great job. I was one of the few who didn’t want the road paved, but they were very professional, worked with us as much as possible on the disruption, came in under budget, and finished quicker than planned. Absolutely five stars.

Questions we hear often from developers, GCs, and municipalities before they get started with us.
We work on commercial site development, public infrastructure, municipal projects, road building, subdivision utility installation, and CDOT-adjacent work. Our sweet spot is full-scope civil packages: one contractor handling excavation, grading, utilities, and road work from start to finish.
Yes. We visit the site, review the plans, and provide a detailed, itemized proposal at no charge. We don’t give ballpark numbers over the phone for commercial scopes, site conditions matter too much to quote without a visit.
Yes. Heyl Construction is fully licensed, bonded, and insured in the state of Colorado. We’re also a CDOT-approved contractor, which qualifies us for public road and municipal infrastructure projects that touch state rights-of-way.
For large-scale commercial or civil projects, reaching out 4–8 weeks before your mobilization window gives us the best chance to fit your schedule. Fall grading windows and spring paving seasons book up fast in western Colorado, earlier is always better.
That’s exactly how we prefer to work. Handling excavation, underground utilities, and road prep under a single contract with one crew eliminates coordination problems between subs and gives you one point of accountability for the entire site.
Seasonal freeze windows are the biggest factor. Grading and utility work needs to be completed within specific windows before the ground hardens, and asphalt placement has its own temperature requirements. On top of that, terrain variability, soil composition, and proximity to CDOT corridors add complexity that general contractors from outside the region often underestimate. We’ve been navigating all of it here for over 27 years.
A delayed site is a delayed project. Whether you’re planning a commercial development, a road rebuild, or full civil utility work, we’ll give you a detailed proposal and a realistic timeline — before you commit to anything.
