Accurate bids. GPS-guided precision. Projects delivered on time and on budget across Colorado’s Western Slope.
Heyl Construction has been moving earth on Colorado’s Western Slope for more than two decades. We work with commercial developers, general contractors, and public works agencies who need a civil crew that shows up with the right equipment, bids the job accurately, and finishes what they start, regardless of whether the project is a 42-acre mixed-use development or a half-mile road cut through rough terrain.
We run GPS machine-control technology across our fleet, which means tighter tolerances, less rework, and a finished grade that actually matches the engineer’s design. From initial site clearing through final subgrade prep, our team handles the full earthwork scope so you’re not coordinating between five different subs. We’re based in Silt and work throughout the Roaring Fork and Colorado River valleys, Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt, Aspen, Vail, and everywhere in between. This is our backyard, and we know how to build in it.
One crew, one contract. Site clearing through finished subgrade, handled by a Western Slope team with accurate bids, GPS precision, and no scope-creep surprises.
Accurate Bids No last-minute scope creep or budget surprises. Detailed, itemized proposals built on real field conditions.

Years on the
Western Slope
Heyl Construction has been based in Silt, Colorado since the beginning. For more than two decades we’ve done civil work up and down the western slope, from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and Vail to Parachute, this isn’t a market we moved into, it’s home, and we know it well.
We deliver a quality civil construction product at a price that makes sense, and we do what we say we’re going to do: accurate bids, realistic timelines, and a GPS-guided Trimble fleet that keeps grading and excavation precise. From a 42-acre mixed-use development with a water ski lake and CDOT improvements to a half-mile private road paved under budget and ahead of schedule, we deliver at every scale across this region.
From first site clearing to finished subgrade, we handle the complete earthwork scope. Every service runs under GPS machine control: accurate cuts, fewer passes, no rework.
Every project starts here. We remove vegetation, topsoil, debris, and existing structures to prepare a clean working surface before grading or excavation begins. Our equipment handles everything from light scraping to heavy brush clearing across large commercial and civil sites.
Large-scale earth moving for commercial site development, road construction, and civil infrastructure. We perform mass excavation and engineered cut-and-fill operations to balance material on site, reducing costly haul-off and import where the terrain allows. GPS machine control keeps every cut precise from the first pass.
We grade to plan. Rough grading establishes the overall site profile; finish grading brings the surface to design elevation and slope. Both phases run under Trimble GPS machine control, so tolerances are tight and the finished grade holds up through the next phase of construction.
A finished grade that isn’t properly prepared underneath it won’t last. We handle compaction, moisture conditioning, and proof-rolling to bring subgrade to the density and bearing requirements your engineer specifies, whether for roads, building pads, parking areas, or utility corridors.
We install and maintain erosion control measures, silt fencing, sediment traps, straw wattles, and inlet protection, to keep the site compliant throughout construction. Our crews understand CDOT and municipal stormwater permit requirements and build these measures into the schedule from mobilization through closeout.
We own and operate our hauling fleet, tandem dumps, side dumps, end dumps, and lowboy services, so material moves on our schedule, not a third-party carrier’s. We manage on-site material transport, off-site spoils disposal, and import of fill or aggregate as required by the project scope.
Site clearing through finished subgrade handled by one crew, with one point of accountability from raw land to build-ready.
Deep local knowledge of Colorado’s terrain, soil conditions, seasonal freeze windows, and utility requirements. We’ve worked this corridor for decades and know what it takes to deliver here.
Trimble machine-control equipment means accurate cuts and fills on every project. Less rework. Tighter tolerances. Better finished grades.
Excavation, grading, underground utilities, road construction, paving, and demo, all handled under one contract by one crew. No coordination headaches between subs. No finger-pointing when something slips.
Qualified for public road and municipal infrastructure projects. If your project touches a public right-of-way or requires state certification, we have the credentials to handle it.
We don’t low-ball to win work and make it up in change orders. Our estimates are detailed and our timelines are realistic. If something changes on site, you hear about it early, not at invoice time.
Tandem dumps, side dumps, end dumps, lowboy, and GPS-guided grading equipment, all in-house. We control the schedule, not a third-party operator.
We keep it straightforward. No vague timelines, no scope-creep surprises. Here’s how an earthwork project moves with Heyl from first contact to site handoff.
Reach out by phone or the proposal form. We’ll get the basic project details, location, scope, timeline, and any existing plans or surveys you have. No lengthy intake process. We move quickly.
For most projects, we’ll schedule a site walk before finalizing the bid. We use computer-based estimation software and our own GPS survey equipment to build a detailed, accurate quote, not a ballpark.
We provide a clear, itemized proposal. Once we’re aligned on scope and timeline, contracting is straightforward. No buried clauses, no vague line items.
Our crew mobilizes with the right equipment for the job. GPS machine control keeps the work precise from day one. We communicate proactively, and if something changes in the field, you hear about it from us first.
We complete a final walkthrough before we leave the site. The grade is confirmed against design plans, the site is clean, and you have documentation ready for the next phase of your project.
The Tree Farm PUD is a 42-acre mixed-use development in the Roaring Fork Valley with a water ski lake and extensive CDOT improvements. When we needed an experienced civil contractor to handle all the infrastructure, including a lift station adjacent to the lake, Heyl won our trust and our business. They’ve been a pleasure to work with, and I’d recommend them for any civil construction needs.

They paved our half-mile stretch of private road, had to deal with ten contrary homeowners, and they did a great job. I was one of the few who didn’t want the road paved, but they were very professional, worked with us as much as possible on the disruption, came in under budget, and finished quicker than planned. Absolutely five stars.

Questions we hear often from developers, GCs, and municipalities before they break ground with us.
We cover the full earthwork scope, site clearing and prep, mass excavation, cut-and-fill operations, rough and finish grading, subgrade preparation, erosion and stormwater control, and material hauling and spoils management. Most of our clients are commercial developers, general contractors, and municipalities who want one contractor managing the entire earthwork phase, not multiple subs.
Yes. We’re CDOT approved and have extensive experience on public roads, municipal infrastructure, and public works contracts. If your project requires CDOT compliance or involves public right-of-way, we understand the documentation and process requirements from day one.
We use computer-based estimation software and build line-item bids, not ballpark figures. For most projects we’ll do a site visit before quoting to make sure the numbers reflect actual field conditions. What you see in our proposal is what you pay. We don’t pad quotes with change orders.
GPS machine control links our equipment directly to the design model from your engineer. The blade or bucket knows exactly where it is relative to the target grade at all times, fewer passes, less over-excavation, and a finished grade that matches the plans. It reduces rework costs and keeps your schedule on track.
The sooner the better, especially for fall grading work. Western Colorado’s freeze window is real, and most earthwork needs to be completed before the ground locks. Spring asphalt and paving season books up quickly as well. Contact us as soon as you have a project date in mind and we’ll give you an honest read on availability.
Yes. We own and operate our own hauling fleet, tandem dumps, side dumps, end dumps, and lowboy services. Moving material with our own trucks keeps the project on our schedule, not a third-party carrier’s, which matters when you’re working against seasonal windows or a hard completion date.
If your project needs an earthwork contractor who bids accurately, mobilizes on schedule, and finishes what they start, let’s talk. We cover the full western slope and we’ve been doing this long enough to know what a good job actually looks like.
