From raw land to build-ready, on budget, on schedule, no surprises.
The freeze window is tight, the terrain is unforgiving, and a miscalculation on cuts and fills costs you time you don’t have. You need a contractor who knows this corridor, not one learning it on your project.
Heyl Construction has been grading land across Garfield, Eagle, and Pitkin counties since 1999. We work with commercial developers, general contractors, and municipal agencies who need grading and site preparation handled by a crew that shows up, hits grades, and moves the project forward. No subcontractor gaps. No vague timelines. Just accurate work from a team that’s built its reputation on this stretch of Colorado. We run GPS-guided Trimble machine-control equipment, so every cut and fill is dialed in before a single pass is made, fewer change orders, tighter tolerances, and finished grades your engineer signs off on the first time.
On budget, before the freeze. GPS-guided grading and site prep from one Western Slope crew, accurate bids, honest timelines, finished grades signed off the first time.
Trimble machine control dials in every cut and fill before the first pass, tighter tolerances, less rework.
Detailed, itemized proposals based on real site conditions, no ballpark numbers, no change-order surprises at invoice time.
Grading, excavation, utilities, road prep, and paving under one contract, raw land to build-ready with one point of accountability.

Years on the
Western Slope
Heyl Construction has been based in Silt, Colorado since the beginning. For more than two decades we’ve done civil work up and down the western slope, from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and Vail to Parachute, this isn’t a market we moved into, it’s home, and we know it well.
We deliver a quality civil construction product at a price that makes sense, and we do what we say we’re going to do: accurate bids, realistic timelines, and a GPS-guided Trimble fleet that keeps grading and excavation precise. From a 42-acre mixed-use development with a water ski lake and CDOT improvements to a half-mile private road paved under budget and ahead of schedule, we deliver at every scale across this region.
Grading is more than moving dirt to elevation. Here’s the full scope of grading and site-prep work we handle on every project.
We handle both the initial rough cut and the precision finish grade your engineer needs for sign-off. Using GPS machine control, we hit tolerances tight enough that rework is rare, commercial pad, subdivision lot, or public works, the grade gets done right the first time.
Before grading begins, the site has to be ready. We handle clearing, stripping of topsoil, and removal of debris so grading can start on a clean slate. For projects with existing structures or vegetation, we coordinate demolition and clearing in the same mobilization.
Balancing cuts and fills accurately is where projects win or lose money. We calculate volumes upfront with precision and execute with our own fleet, tandem dumps, end dumps, and lowboys, so material moves efficiently and nothing gets left to guesswork.
Poor drainage creates long-term problems no one wants to deal with after construction. We grade for proper drainage from the start, managing slope, directing flow, and meeting storm drainage requirements so water goes where it’s supposed to go.
From multi-lot residential subdivisions to large commercial pad sites, we’ve graded projects of every scale across Garfield and Eagle counties. We work directly with engineers and developers to meet design specifications and keep the schedule on track.
A paved road is only as good as the subgrade beneath it. We prepare road subgrades to spec, compacted, graded, and ready for base course and asphalt. For CDOT-adjacent or municipal road projects, we have the approvals and experience to work in right-of-way.
Grading, excavation, utilities, and paving handled by one crew, with one point of accountability from raw land to build-ready.
Deep local knowledge of Colorado’s terrain, soil conditions, seasonal freeze windows, and utility requirements. We’ve worked this corridor for decades and know what it takes to deliver here.
Trimble machine-control equipment means accurate cuts and fills on every project. Less rework. Tighter tolerances. Better finished grades.
Excavation, grading, underground utilities, road construction, paving, and demo, all handled under one contract by one crew. No coordination headaches between subs. No finger-pointing when something slips.
Qualified for public road and municipal infrastructure projects. If your project touches a public right-of-way or requires state certification, we have the credentials to handle it.
We don’t low-ball to win work and make it up in change orders. Our estimates are detailed and our timelines are realistic. If something changes on site, you hear about it early, not at invoice time.
Tandem dumps, side dumps, end dumps, lowboy, and GPS-guided grading equipment, all in-house. We control the schedule, not a third-party operator.
We keep it straightforward. No vague timelines, no scope-creep surprises. Here’s how a grading project moves with Heyl from first contact to final sign-off.
Reach out by phone or through the proposal form. We’ll get the scope basics, project type, location, acreage, and timeline, and schedule a site visit if needed to understand what we’re working with.
We put together a detailed, accurate bid based on actual site conditions and your engineering plans. No ballpark numbers. You get a clear scope, a realistic schedule, and a price that doesn’t change without a conversation first.
Once you’re ready to move, we mobilize crew and equipment. We coordinate with your GC or engineer on sequencing, confirm grade stakes and benchmarks, and clear or strip the site as needed before grading begins.
Our GPS-guided equipment gets to work, rough grading first, then finish grading to the tolerances your plans require. We track progress against schedule and flag anything that needs a decision early, not when it’s already a problem.
We walk the finished grade with you or your engineer, confirm it meets spec, and hand off a clean site ready for the next phase. Need utilities or paving? We can stay on as the same crew under the same contract.
The Tree Farm PUD is a 42-acre mixed-use development in the Roaring Fork Valley with a water ski lake and extensive CDOT improvements. When we needed an experienced civil contractor to handle all the infrastructure, including a lift station adjacent to the lake, Heyl won our trust and our business. They’ve been a pleasure to work with, and I’d recommend them for any civil construction needs.
CFO, Geronimo Ventures LLC
They paved our half-mile stretch of private road, had to deal with ten contrary homeowners, and they did a great job. I was one of the few who didn’t want the road paved, but they were very professional, worked with us as much as possible on the disruption, came in under budget, and finished quicker than planned. Absolutely five stars.

Questions we hear often from developers, GCs, and municipalities before they break ground with us.
Grading costs vary depending on acreage, existing terrain, soil conditions, and the scope of work involved. On the Western Slope, ground conditions and seasonal access windows can also affect pricing. We provide detailed, accurate bids based on your specific site, not ballpark estimates. Request a proposal and we’ll give you a real number based on what the project actually needs (pricing subject to change; contact us for a current quote).
We work on commercial site development, subdivision and pad grading, road subgrade preparation, drainage grading, cut and fill earthwork, and full site preparation. We serve developers, general contractors, municipalities, and public works agencies across Garfield, Eagle, and Pitkin counties.
Yes. Heyl Construction is Licensed and Bonded by the State of Colorado and CDOT Approved for public road and municipal infrastructure projects. We carry full commercial insurance and have the credentials to work on both private and public-sector projects.
For commercial or public works projects, we recommend reaching out as early in the planning process as possible, especially for fall grading windows before ground freeze. Spring and summer are our busiest seasons. The earlier we’re engaged, the better we can sequence your project into our schedule and avoid delays.
Yes. Grading is one part of what we do. Heyl Construction handles the full civil scope, excavation, underground utilities, water and sewer line installation, road construction, and asphalt paving, all under one contract. Staying with one contractor from raw land to build-ready eliminates handoff gaps and keeps your timeline clean.
We run GPS-guided Trimble machine-control equipment for precision grading, along with our own fleet of tandem dumps, side dumps, end dumps, and lowboy transport. Everything is in-house, we’re not relying on third-party equipment operators, which means we control the schedule and the quality of the work.
The grading window on the Western Slope doesn’t wait. If you have a project coming up, commercial, municipal, or large-scale residential, get Heyl in early. We’ll give you an accurate bid, a realistic schedule, and a crew that delivers.
